View from a fashion blogger: Helen’s Wardrobe

Helen’s Wardrobe is a fashion blog all about style for women and men, past and upcoming trends, fashion history and vintage. Taking inspiration from films, music videos and photography it’s creator Helen Stanley describes it as a ”labour of love”. Following an education in media production, garment construction and costume design Helen worked under several brands as a Visual Merchandiser and is now a full time stylist, for  projects including editorial photo shoots, advertorials, films and music videos and now boasts an accumulative collection of rare vintage pieces.

Helen also confesses her penchant for pirates, skulls, F1 and cars. When she has a spare moment she can also be found scouting underground designers from across the world on her fashion mobile apps – here’s her pick of the best….

What percentage of your wardrobe do you buy online as opposed to in-store?

50% of my wardrobe consists of online finds, including high street, designer and vintage pieces. I love to shop online as well as in store, which experience I choose depends on how much time I have and the occasion.

Which are your most loved brands to buy from online, and why?

I like to hunt down vintage pieces on eBay and Buy My Wardrobe is great for preloved designer finds. For injections of trend and colour I visit ASOS and H&M and for designer sale items I always go to The Outnet. Recently I’ve become a little obsessed with Harvey Nichols online, which is especially great for seasonal sales.

What features do you most appreciate when shopping from online fashion shops? i.e. Editorial content, free returns, styling advice, video content etc

I like to find independent designers and brands as well as the established names, the easiest way to do this is online. I’ve come across designers I would never have found otherwise. For example Zamrie, a Chicago based designer, I found Zamrie online and recently created a feature on one of their pieces for my blog. Some online stores have incredible photography, it’s really inspirational and definitely helps when I’m planning outfits. The presentation and layout are very important to me when I’m shopping online, I like clean and simple with great imagery. That’s perfect online shopping.

If you have a smartphone, do you have any fashion apps on it? Which are your favourites?

I like Upper Street, an app which allows you to design one – of – a – kind footwear, it’s really fun and the designs can then be made to order. I use the eBay app to keep an eye on bargain vintage pieces and I like the Zara app too because it’s so clean visually.

What’s your favourite social media channel for connecting with fashion brands?

Twitter, I have made so many connections, I’ve found designers, brands, other bloggers and styling clients through Twitter. It’s a fantastic marketing tool for fashion.
